today marks our jewel's first official swim meet...
i held out for as long as i could... wanting to preserve our saturdays for family time rather than committing to sports events that took good chunks of the day away. but alas, it was bound to happen eventually.
our jewel made the traveling swim team through our local Y this year and so, you'll find us many saturdays at a pool somewhere in NJ.
she loves it. she's making new friends and learning what it means to be on a team. she's excited to swim and we hope that we can be a blessing to the other families we encounter.
anyways, back to the day...
she swam 2 strokes: freestyle and breast 50yds each. she did well and improved her time from her last time.
afterwards, we went to a local harvest festival where we decorated pumpkins, went on a hayride, and then our jewel swung on a giant swing.
we came home and finished the evening carving pumpkins. actually my man and our jewel carved pumpkins, while i worked but it still counts cause i was in the same room and commented every once in a while, right?
it was a LONG day for me, but it was so worth seeing the smile on our jewel's face. she had a blast!

Yard sales and other weekend endeavors
going to the mall is probably one of my least favorite things to do... in general, any kind of shopping isn't on my "things i like to do" list. i have to be in the mood and often i'm not :)
but sometimes, desperate times call for desperate measures.
i've been looking for a tri bike for our jewel for several months now. she's outgrown the bike she uses now and it's not remotely fit for a racing bike. so off we went today. we hit a community yard sale this morning. the first 2 hours were not productive at all. we didn't see what we needed and i really felt like it was a complete waste of time.
i know, i know... you have to go to yard sales expecting you may not find what you want, willing to rummage, etc... but i really don't have the patience for it.
anyhoo, you know when you've already invested time and effort and you're at that fork in the road, where you decide if 1. it's a sunk cost and it's time to just go home and redeem the rest of the day or 2. you say, you've already invested 2 hours and you're not leaving until you buy something??
well, today, it was the second that governed my thoughts. so onward we trudged. i'm glad we did, the last 30 mins of a 4 hours endeavor proved the most productive:
we got our jewel a steal of a bike... $5!! it's not a tri bike but at least it's her size and it buys me about 6 more months to find a reasonably priced tri bike before tri training starts up.
we got our precious a bike with an adult steering handle for $3.50
we got our jewel a cd player for $5 that she can now use to listen to her audio books in her room. personally, i was pretty psyched because it's the 3rd used one i've purchased in the last year and this one actually worked.
i also got a swimming vest for our precious for 50 cents. i had purchased one online awhile ago but it's a little too big and she doesn't like it. i really didn't want to spend the money for a new one when i figured she'll probably be able to use it next year so this one will work well for the occasional winter trip to the y.
lastly, i got a few school related things: a constellation kit for $1, which is perfect for a science project we're doing for CC in several weeks and a 3-D triangular puzzle for $1.
the other thing that i'm pretty excited about is our new color printer.
it might be the only time that i've been more excited than my man over a piece of technology.
i was thinking that it's kind of funny that in the past, i thought colored printers in our home were a waste as we mostly used it for printing documents and i didn't like having to buy the more expensive ink for something we didn't need. but with school, i find that color printers are a must!
who knew a printer would get me so excited?!
lastly, tomorrow our jewel will be off to the first of her many swim related activities without us. after church, she's got team pictures, and then a pasta party for just the team... no parents allowed.
i'm so used to being at events... even if we're just serving in the background, that it'll be a little weird not to be able to peek in on her. i guess it's part of growing up - both for her and me.
