i started running 4 miles this week. it's not a huge deal, but i need to mark it to encourage myself that i progressing. the few runs are taking it's toll on my back and i can feel the muscles flaring up, but i'll probably keep plowing ahead anyways.
i finally started jotting down my workout notes. note to self. it's best not to look at where you were a year ago especially when that year was spent, pregnant and on the couch. when i made the mistake of looking and comparing, it brought such discouragement. i kept thinking that i have a long way to go before i am back to where i was this time last year. but then i looked at my little man and the discouragement was replaced with sheer mama joy! i love my little guy. his smiles melt my heart.
But none of these things move me; nor do I count my life dear to myself, so that I may finish my race with joy, and the ministry which I received from the Lord Jesus, to testify to the gospel of the grace of God. Acts 20:24

Counting the victories
It was three months Sunday since my C section.
I've been cautiously getting back into Crossfit. I had issues working out with our precious so I knew I had to take it easy. Today was Crossfit visit #5... abs. yup. Had I really thought about it, I probably wouldn't have gone.
Today's WOD (workout of the day): 4 RFT (rounds for time):
25 abmat situps,
250m row
10 V situps
5 sumo deadlifts
The V situps are what killed me. I couldn't even do one. I knew after that first attempt that I was in trouble. I basically fumbled my way through 40 of those... which really shouldn't have been counted. But I was pretty proud of myself that I did finish the workout, even with pretty horrid looking situps. I was dead last. It took me 18:09 minutes... something that really should have taken under 10 minutes. but I was so proud of myself that I didn't give up.
Unfortunately, today's workout wasn't an anomaly. I'm seeing that this time around is a different exercise journey. The first two post-baby-returns were easy peasy come backs. This one's a toughie. Could it be I'm older? I'm tired? It's my third (and second C Section)? I'm in a gym where I'm by far the oldest one there? YES, yes, yes, and yes! It's hard to come to terms with age. The brain still thinks it can. Sadly, the body takes a little more work. I'm finding it psychologically hard to get myself motivated to go. It's gotten me thinking... is this what it's like for those who haven't worked out before? Perhaps those who've tried and stopped, stopped because it wasn't getting easier, fast enough.
In times past, when I started, it was as if my body remembered. It was tough, but I could tell my body wanted to work. This time around, my body just stares back and says, "what?!" yeah, you know what i mean, right?
So, I record today's difficult WOD as a virtual high-five to myself for going, for finishing, and for not letting myself feel intimated by others' scores.
Yeah! me :)

the good, the bad, and the ugly
i went for a run today - first time in 2 months! it wasn't a pretty sight but man, did it feel good! i could breathe in the spring air and it was so nice to get out. my lungs were ever so grateful!
i can't wait to get out there again.
i'll have to see if my man would be up for it - don't worry we won't go at midnight this time :)

accountability
i didn't work out yesterday - that makes day 2. if you know me at all, you're know that if i don't workout on a day i'm scheduled to workout, then i get VERY cranky.
so... since i didn't get to work out sunday or monday, i told my man monday night that we had to do something before we went to bed. the deal was - no one was able to get into that bed until we did 200 push ups. so at 12:30am, my man and i got down on the floor and did 200 pushups. i don't think my man liked me very much last night :)

new year brings new goals
i put on a pair on jeans yesterday and i couldn't believe it! it was so tight i couldn't breathe! and this was a size bigger than my usual wear.... ugh! this is what happens without running :(
alas - i've had to say a temporary farewell to running due to health reasons and so now, i've got a new goal.
so, for the next several posts, i'll be putting up some workouts that can be done at home with minimal equipment. you will need: a chin up bar, dumbbells, and an exercise mat.
it's based on the 300 challenge. i've seen variations of this online. i'm modified it to meet my needs so that it looks nothing like that link - but at least you can see where i'll eventually go with this. my current goal is to do 300 each of the following: push ups, situps, and squats.
today's routine looked like this:
15 modified pull ups
25 push ups
25 sit ups
50 squats
1 min break and repeat 3x more.
after the first set - i realized that the pull up to push up wasn't happening so i ended up switching the push ups and sit ups. it was too much arm back to back to be able to finish the workout. so in total i did 55 modified pull ups (i cheated on the 3rd set and only did 10 accidentally), 100 push ups, 100 sit ups and 200 squats.
oh and the other thing i did that i started doing push up/dumbbell row combo for the push ups, but that didn't last long.

working out
yesterday was a good workout day! LOVE that!!
but it didn't start out that day. i could tell from the start of the day that it was going to be one of THOSE days... so i forced myself to get over to the gym and just do one class. nothing else. just one class. so i did. usually, after the class i'll go over to the weights and do another "workout session". but today, there was no persuading myself into that one and to be honest, i didn't feel the least bit guilty since i was falling asleep at the wheel on the way over to the gym!
so that was it. i went about the rest of my day... yada yada yada. until evening. my brother in law and fam is in town. they wanted to hit the gym. i was the member they needed to give them access to the gym. so, what happened? i went for another work out. i ran 5 miles and then did a circit workout for another hour with my brother in law's brother (does that make him my brother in law too?). it was a good sweat day! (i measure how good my workout was by how much i sweat - gross, but it works for me).
even better, when i got home, i was so tired that i only had a bowl of soup and a slice of bread. and then it was off to bed. (usually, after an evening workout, i'm rummaging the pantry for anything and then i eat everything!).
today, i'm not even going to feel guilty about not working out :)
i think 3 workouts in one day can be transferred over as 1 1/2 worksouts over two days, right? ha ha ha

fitness all around
saturday i helped a friend run a 5K. was such fun - although i know she didn't think it was fun during the race. it was such a joy to see someone do something (s)he didn't think (s)he could do. it was also secretly fun because i wasn't the one running the race. races are funny. it's not life or death (in most cases) and at this point in my life, it's not a grade thing, or an award thing. but it still gets my blood pumping, my butterflies fluttering, and my stomach all topsy turvy. i love the accomplishment of it, but all of the rest of the stuff that accompanies it - the training, the night leading up to it, etc... it's all stressful.
yesterday was field day at our jewel's school. i headed it up this year. it was a lot of fun but it was time consuming planning, organizing, and instructing these kids. the morning was set aside for PK 3 through 1st grade. after lunch i had the 2nd through 12th graders come out. i LOVED working w/ the boys. they're so competitive and they really got into it. i was surprised that some of the girls got into it too (esp given their usual response to gym class). all in all, i have to say that i have more respect for the teachers of the younger kids. some of these kids lacked self discipline and were so easily distracted, it was so hard to give instructions on a game. really, they're just being kids, but wow! having 10 kids all stand in a single line all at the same time! now that's an accomplishment!
while it was fun, i'm glad that i can get back into my own workout schedule. yesterday's field day threw me off and you know how i am when i don't get in my workout!

P90X update
today is day 3 of the workout and WHY is my chest still sore from day 1?!
today's workout was the kenpo X, which is pretty similar to billy blank's kickboxing workouts. wasn't so bad, but i'm not looking forward to tomorrow - shoulders and back! ugh. i'm so out of shape!
our jewel was so sad not to be able to workout w/ me today. she's really getting into exercising w/ me. but on the way home from school today she said she wanted to do the exercises w/ the girls, not the boys, because the girls were pretty. that translated into, she wanted to do one of The Firm videos, and not the P90X vidoes.
my my my, advertising works at such a young age!

P90X
OK, so i finally jumped on the bandwagon and started this today.
i'm not a big TV watcher, so it took me a while to realize what all the hype was. apparently, it's just the latest in workout videos. that's right, it's the 2009 version of Denise Austin, the Firm, Billy Blank's Kickboxing...
since i'm trying not to sign up for any long distance races this year, it kind of puts a drag on my training... because i'm just not that motivated without a goal.
but p90x is set for 90 days. so here we go...
day 1: chest and back.
my comments - hard workout, even after cheating through all of the pull ups (basically 1/2 the video), and hitting the stop button a bit prematurely... making the excuse i had to clean house... thank goodness we had small group tonight :)
i'll have to see how sore i am tomorrow.

TIP #1 Get Fit America!
Health, nutrition, and God gets me fired up.
Sometimes, i think that I'd like to write a book and other times i think, what am i crazy? i don't even like to write. but my husband gave me an idea to channel my thoughts into this blog.
So, I've decided to try something new (let's see how long this lasts...)
I'm going to try to post a "tip a week" on mostly God-oriented health and nutrition topics.
I'll start this off w/ the importance of exercise. Since everyone already knows it's important, i'll skip that part and instead list a link for a little motivator you can sign up for:
